A dark chocolate vessel holds this luscious chocolate mousse spiked with your favorite liqueur. If there’s a prerequisite to ring in the new year, this should be it!

I took a break. A break from food blogging, a break from social media. A break from reading amazing food blogs. A break.

I spent 10 days without looking at my stats, without climbing on a single chair to get the perfect shot, a break from turning on my oven for anything other than making food for the family. None of it was photographed. Food blogging, social media, and I – A threesome, if you will, were on a break. I was preparing for and celebrating Christmas and it felt mighty, mighty fine.

I loved having family and friends over; to eat, to drink, to laugh, to speak in too loud voices. None of it was photographed for social media. It was awesome. Take my word for it.

Following Christmas I binge watched season after season of The Wire. Have you watched that show? Totally underrated show. And Idris Elba? Mmmm. I done knocked a few guys off my “list” to make room for that man.

None of this was shared. It was mine.

This was the longest break I’ve taken from blogging since May. I found I missed it. I missed creating content. I missed photographing, sharing. I missed it all. Ideas would invade my head, subliminal messages of “make me, bake me, create me”! were all up in there. I ignored them for a bit. But now I’m back. And I truly hope you missed me.

2014 is coming to an end. I have made no resolutions. I don’t vow to be harder, faster, better, stronger. I will not join a gym or sign up for a Spartan race. I won’t grow out my hair for a “new look”. I will not vow to eat healthily. There will be no “New Me”. It will be the old, but wiser me.

This year was a hard year. Hard. Hard. It was eye opening in many aspects. I sustained what I felt at the time were heavy losses and those losses made me reevaluate my life situation. I realized I was holding myself back. I was a stagnant pond, a pond whose edges were sludgy, slimy. 2014 was the year I came out the other side. Thankfully I didn’t do it alone.

2014 was also a year of gains. I found my passion for creating content in this space. Every time I hit the “Publish” button, I was filled with happiness, even when 2 people were reading my words. I connected more, with both family and friends. I joined groups, “met” people, shared content. I went waaaay outside my comfort zone and did this.

I found peace in my brains; a brain I thought broken. I found peace in myself; a self I felt, I believed was well beyond repair.

And I really cannot express what that means to me. There are no words; the outpouring of feelings cannot be articulated. The value is immeasurable. The only thing I can say is this: For a long, long time I felt I didn’t have a place and now I do.

Yeah, 2014 was a year of heavy losses and terrific gains. I am glad to see it come to an end, yet I am also excited for what’s to come. What I plan to build, who I will connect with, people I have yet to meet, what sort of content will be planting its flag in my brains and invading the shit out of it. The ebb and flow of it all.

I can’t wait.

Let’s close out this year on a happy, endorphin releasing note. Let’s make a batch of chocolate cups and fill them with a boozy chocolate mousse. I love making chocolate mousse. It’s fairly easy to put together and the presentation is always “POW!”. I dig it. Everyone I serve this to digs it. You’re going to dig it.

I love the idea of edible vessels, and so I melted some chocolate, swirled it inside some silicone cups, then chilled it. The effort is minimal, and the effect is both tasty and beautiful.

Seriously…. Look at this situation.

The mousse is very light, light enough to eat 2 of these if you wanted to and this batch makes a generous 6. Plus it’s spiked with booze and who can object to that? I added some colorful sprinkles on top ’cause we’re celebrating and I for one love to throw confetti. For real. I’m considering walking with a pocketful of the stuff.

Let’s bring 2014 to its fabulous end. Let go of what doesn’t work, what doesn’t bring your life fulfillment or value. Let go of what doesn’t bring you love, of what makes you sad, of what didn’t bring you personal or professional growth.

Just let it go.

2015 is whatever you want it to be. I for one will be rolling with chocolate mousse and sprinkles, a positive disposition, a swing in my step, a bold Latina attitude, a love of who I am and what I do.

I’m going to be me.

Happy New Year!!!

Ingredients

For the chocolate cups

  • 1 1/4 cup semi sweet chocolate

For the chocolate mousse

  • 1 cup semi or bittersweet chocolate chopped
  • 2 ounces half a stick of butter
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of liqueur of choice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup 8oz heavy cream
  • Sprinkles to top optional

Instructions

Make the chocolate mousse:

  • Place chocolate and butter in a medium bowl. Set the bowl over a pan of simmering water stirring occasionally until melted. Once melted, remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  • Combine the yolks, sugar, liqueur of choice and vanilla extract in the bowl of an electric mixer, or a medium sized bowl. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water and whisk until very warm and thickened. Once thickened, remove from heat, place in electric mixer and whip until cold and very thick. If you don’t have an electric mixer, just bust out a whip and give it some arm action. Set aside.
  • In a bowl of an electric mixer or using a hand mixer or hand whip, beat 1 cup of heavy cream until it holds stiff peaks. Set aside. Working quickly, add the melted chocolate to the thickened yolk mixture and fold thoroughly. Add the heavy cream to the yolk/chocolate mixture and fold quickly, but gently until no white streaks remain. Place in the freezer to chill for 15-20 minutes.
  • While the mousse is chilling, make the chocolate cups.

Make the chocolate cups:

  • Set aside 6 silicone cupcake liners. Place chocolate in a small bowl. Set the bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir occasionally until melted.
  • Spoon 2 heaping tablespoons of melted chocolate inside each silicone cup and swirl it around to coat the cups completely. Place the cups in the freezer, on top of a flat surface to chill for about 15 minutes.
  • Once completely chilled, gently remove the chilled chocolate from the silicone cups and set aside to fill.

To assemble:

  • Pipe or spoon chocolate mousse inside chocolate cups. Pile that situation high. Top with sprinkles and either chill until ready to eat, or go in on those bad boys right away.
