Kitchen Tips: Chopped Nuts vs Nuts, Chopped

OK, fine – I exaggerate. This isn’t some GREAT debate; more like a discussion around this topic.

So… Nuts, right?

I love them in my cookies, I’m pretty sure you love them in YOUR cookies. Like this giant ass cookie situation right here (Shameless plug. Click on the pic, yo!).

You’re as nuts about nuts as I am. I love that about you.

But when you get down to the recipe nitty gritty, you’re confused by the instructions.

You peep a recipe and when it comes to nuts, you see one of the following:

1 cup of chopped nuts.

OR!

1 cup of nuts, chopped.

What the hell does that mean?!

I got you, boo. Flow with me, we’re going to break down this nut situation.

1 cup of chopped nuts: Means you measure out 1 cup of nuts, then you chop ‘em up.

1 cup of nuts, chopped: Means you chop up a mess ‘o’ nuts, then you scoop nuts into a 1 cup measure until you’ve reached 1 cup’s worth.

Why is there a difference?

I’m glad you asked, boo.

The difference between these two is this: Chopping up nuts and scooping them into your measuring cup can yield more nuts – As much as 20%, depending on how small you’re chopping.

Does this matter?

In the grand scheme of things? Nah. Who the hell complains about more nuts in their cookies?

I don’t.

I only complain if a cookie is not in my belly fast enough.

For recipes, which do you prefer?

Glad you asked, homeslice.

My preference has always been 1 cup of nuts, chopped. Why? Because I like to get the measuring out of the way as quickly as possible. What can I say? I’m forgetful like a mofo, plus I’m easily distracted.

Will more nuts ruin my recipe?

No way! It will not affect your recipe at all, unless it’s been processed to nut flour. And that’s a whole ‘nother kitchen tip. Adding more chopped nuts to a cookie is no more different than adding more chocolate chips. And I have yet to meet someone who complains of too many chocolate chips in their cookie.

So now you know the difference.

It wasn’t very scientifical (totally a word. Flow with it), but I hope it cleared up any confusion.

Now… Go bake some cookies.

With nuts, chopped.
